My Biography (of sorts)-- Gail M. Detjen PT  DPT

Okay, so maybe I don't look like this. However, I do live in Wisconsin, and I love the Badgers and the Packers! The truth of the matter is that  I am not a "picture" person. Don't get me wrong. I love taking pictures-- of other people. I just don't like being in pictures, and I rarely take a "selfie".  It's not that I am a vain person; it's just that my perception of myself, and the photographic reality never seem to match up!  It unnerves me sometimes, but I guess we all struggle with how we feel, and how we are perceived. I think that is especially true for people who struggle with chronic pain. When I was a young physical therapist, in my twenties, headache pain blurred my vision, challenged my mental capabilities, and taunted my emotions every day. Yet to anyone looking at me, I appeared young, confident, and attractive.  It did not match what I felt inside! Now, in my 50's, I feel wonderful most days.  So it comes as a shock to me when I look in the mirror, or at a photograph of myself: who is that old lady looking back at me? Sigh. Never mind.  I feel blessed!  I am right where I am supposed to be. I am finally practicing physical therapy the way I have always wanted to: helping people wherever they are, and providing whatever they need.  Yes, I have a doctorate in physical therapy and 30+ years of experience, but there is more to the story.  I have been privileged to work with adults of all ages, teenagers, and children.  I have encountered patients with a variety of diagnoses and challenges.  I have struggled with chronic pain and physical challenges myself. Finally, I have been blessed with gifts of healing that the Lord has entrusted to me. It amazes me every day what the Lord is able to do through me. Then I remember His promise in John 14:12: "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these . . . "  I can do physical therapy, and more, to help those in need of healing. Thank-you, Jesus!

When Physical Therapy alone can't heal what hurts  . . .

I feel called to do this work.  I know what it feels like to be in pain.  However, physical pain that does not heal as expected, and becomes chronic, often has emotional, psychological, and spiritual roots as well. Strong feelings and emotions that accompany the physical trauma can linger and block overall healing.  Months or years after an traumatic injury, the pain can still be felt.  The good news is that healing is still possible!   God can heal hearts and minds, as well as broken bodies, through prayer, and the gift of healing in the hands of his followers.

The following interview with Judith MNutt, of Christian Healing Ministries, inspires me. I hope it will fill you with hope and knowlege too.
